Blantyre Lions Club, in conjunction with the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS), will on Sunday conduct a blood donation exercise in response to reports that there is a huge blood deficit in the country.

According to club fundraising chairperson Tarang Makhecha, the exercise will be held outside Vanzara Brothers premises in Blantyre with the city’s mayor, Noel Chalamanda, in attendance.

“We hold the event every year in support of MBTS. It is sad that the country still faces blood deficit and this is dangerous as it risks the lives of many people in the hospitals. Our club believes in charity and we set up the event to help those lacking blood in hospitals,” said Makhecha.

He said last year they collected 34 pints and they are now targeting 40 or more.

“We are calling upon everybody to join us by donating blood and let me assure them that blood donation is safe because MBTS uses professionals so that no one is left in danger after donating blood,” said Makhecha.

In an interview, MBTS chief executive officer Natasha Nsamala said they struggle to collect blood during school holidays and appealed for support from the public to ensure the blood banks do not go dry.
